Entrevista com Jonh Rummel, antigo chefe dos Homens de Negro

Os funcionários do Departamento de Protecção Planetária da NASA têm uma missão delicada nas mãos: não só evitar que formas extraterrestres se introduzam na Terra como também, garantir que o homem não contamine outros mundos.

Até há pouco tempo o cartão de visita de Jonh Rummel exibia o impressionante título de Oficial de Protecção Planetária.
O facto é que fora contratado pela NASA para defender a Terra de formas de vida extraterrestre…e vice – versa.
Agora, coordena o Programa de Astrobiologia da agência espacial, com um orçamento de 30 milhões de dólares.
Entre outras coisas, inclui o desenvolvimento de instrumentos que possam analisar o ADN em ambientes extremos para a vida.

Em ambientes extremos, como Marte, por exemplo.

O que significa estar encarregado de proteger um planeta?
Faz – me lembrar o actor Tommy Lee Jones nos filmes da série Men in Black.
Por um lado, trata – se de garantir que não se introduzirá na Terra algum mini – alien escondido no uniforme de um astronauta ou uma sonda, para poder causar quem sabe desastres ambientais ou de saúde pública; por outro, não queremos alterar inadvertidamente com os nossos germes possíveis formas de vida extraterrestres.
Os homenzinhos verdes também tem direitos!
Imagine o que seria anunciar a descoberta de um micróbio em Marte e descobrir, depois que chegaram ali indo da Florida, levados por um dos nossos robôs!
Trabalhou então nas missões que se encontram agora em Marte.
Sim. A mais recente foi a Phoenix Mars Lander, que chegará ao destino em Maio e tem por missão explorar o Pólo Norte do planeta Vermelho.
O próximo projecto será o Mars Science Laboratory, o passo seguinte no programa de exploração marciana da NASA, que será lançado no Outono de 2009.
Um dos instrumentos que integra poder aquecer amostras de terra e examinar os vapores, pelo que será essencial para procurar compostos que contenham água e carbono.
Os objectivos científicos incluem saber se Marte foi, ou ainda é um meio capaz de albergar vida microbiana.
E o que faz para evitar que factores de contaminação terrestre possam chegar a outro planeta?
Primeiro é preciso determinar se o corpo celeste em questão pode ser contaminado e se isso teria, ou não consequências de ordem cientifica.
Se for o caso devemos limpar a nave cuidadosamente: em princípio, com um método tão básico como o álcool, mas também com peróxido de hidrogénio, que elimina os compostos químicos orgânicos.
Por vezes, recorre – se a medidas mais drásticas.
Por exemplo, as sondas das missões Viking enviadas a Marte na década de 1970 foram sujeitas a temperaturas muito elevadas durante 50 horas antes de partirem.
Assim eliminaram – se todos os micróbios de que nos lembramos na altura.
Hoje não é habitual irmos tão longe mas garantimos uma boa higiene dos equipamentos, também para evitarmos que os micro – organismos terrestres interfiram nas experiências que as naves transportam.
No entanto por exemplo, na “sala limpa” da empresa Astrotech, na Florida, onde se preparam as sondas interplanetárias, estive muito perto do aparelho com uma simples mascara e um fato especial.
Não poderia tê – lo contaminado com a minha respiração?
Sim. As naves não podem estar 100% livres a germes.
O propósito não é eliminar todos os micro – organismos, mas controlar as suas populações.
E o que usam para isso?
Equipamento de esterilização como as auto claves que se usam em cirurgia?
Não podemos utilizar auto claves, pois funcionam com vapor e precisamos de trabalhar em condições muito secas.
Usamos fornos especiais que geram uma temperatura de 52ºC.
Até que ponto sabemos se há ou não micróbios em Marte?
É possível que os haja, mas ainda não temos, na realidade informação concreta.
A superfície de Marte parece ser inanimada, hostil à vida que conhecemos.
A radiação a que está exposta acaba com tudo.
Todavia tenho o pressentimento de que poderá haver micróbios no subsolo.
E não é possível que caso existam, tenham lá sido colocados pelas nossas naves?
Não seria fácil, se tratasse de um simples impacto contra a superfície.
Em contra partida, seria mais preocupantes no caso das naves concebidas para se enterrarem mais de um par de metros.
Por exemplo, os micro – robôs Deep Space 2 preocupam – me muito mais do que a nave que os transportou, a Mars Polar Lander.
Em Dezembro de 1999, essa sonda não interpretou bem uma ordem quando estava a 40 metros de altura e despenhou – se.
É possível que os contentores das Deep Space 2 tenham caído e ficado enterrados à beira da calote polar, na zona do planeta mais propicia ao desenvolvimento da vida.
O que se passa de perfuração das novas sondas?
Não corremos os riscos dos nossos instrumentos de exploração se transformarem em instrumentos de contaminação?
Trata – se de um perigo muito real.
No entanto é possível procurar sinais de vida em Marte sem introduzir organismos com os nossos instrumentos.
Claro que existe uma certa probabilidade de contaminação, mas não creio que seja de maior do que a de Marte ter sido naturalmente alterado por algum meteorito que tivesse colidido previamente com a Terra e viajando até lá.
Essas colisões já ocorreram outras vezes não é verdade?
Sim, e podem voltar a acontecer.
De facto, a possibilidade de um corpo de grandes dimensões se precipitar sobre a Terra e colocar a rala humana em perigo de extinção é uma das grandes razões para Terraformar Marte.
Queremos pensar que teremos onde viver se este nos faltar, outro mundo que nos dê a oportunidade de sobreviver como civilização, se houver uma catástrofe.
Qual a sua opinião sobre a terra – formação do Planeta Vermelho?
Agrada – me a ideia.
Implica um exercício que nos permite contextualizar e visualizar a engenharia planetária a uma escala que nos ajuda, inclusivamente a compreender melhor o aquecimento global aqui na Terra.
Todavia, embora seja uma boa iniciativa ainda não se sabe muito bem como pô – la em prática.
Sim creio que é muito possível virmos a necessitar de outro planeta, mais cedo ou mais tarde, mas também não podemos mudar Marte de um momento para o outro.
Teremos de agir com sabedoria.
Quais as melhores zonas de Marte para procurar vida?
Sem dúvida que os barrancos e as ribanceiras por onde antes corriam Arroios.
É ai que se poderá encontrar vida subterrânea, digamos que a mais de cinco metros de profundidade no solo.
A ideia é enviar naves robotizadas que estejam também equipadas com mini – sondas.
Poderiam cobrir várias zonas do terreno em simultâneo e comunicar as descobertas à nave principal.
O que aconteceria à ideia de trazer amostras de terreno de Marte?
Obter amostras não só implica riscos biológicos como é uma tarefa muito exigente do ponto de vista tecnológico.
Por isso essas missões ainda não foram aprovadas.
A NASA tem planos para 2020, mas a Agencia Espacial Europeia “ESA” pretende enviar uma sonda com esse objectivo já em 2011.
Aprendemos algo com as missões Apollo à Lua quanto à fora de trazer amostras de rochas e do solo de outros planetas?
Sim. Aprendemos como não deve ser feito.
E aprendemos que não se deve misturar seres humanos com amostras.
Os primeiros astronautas a chegar a Marte vão regressar à Terra como heróis, mas de mãos vazias.
Traremos os espécimes separadamente, através de determinado tipo de robôs, para garantir que não se produza a menor contaminação.
Sabemos como adiciona-las e protege-las dos micróbios terrestres, mas também será preciso descobrir se integram uma componente genética e a sua reacção patogénica.
Se chegarmos finalmente a Marte e descobrirmos vida, poderá ocorrer algo semelhante ao que acontece no filme A Guerra dos Mundos, em que os invasores morreram infectados por bactérias terrestres?
É possível. Basicamente, é isso que acontece com as crianças quando vão para os infantários.
Se uma regressa a casa com gripe, acaba por contagiar toda a família.
Por isso antes de enviarmos uma missão a Marte teremos de planear a tarefa com todo o cuidado.
O que imagina que sucederá se um dia anunciarem que se descobriu vida lá em cima?
Terei de mudar o número do meu telemóvel!
Na realidade, o anúncio seria feito bastante tempo depois dos cientistas terem retirado as suas conclusões.
No entanto, o modo de lidar com a imprensa e o anúncio do acontecimento aos meios de comunicação também seriam desafios que teríamos de enfrentar.
Qual é o seu maior pesadelo em relação ao Planeta Vermelho?
Sem dúvidas, o de podermos contamina – lo involuntariamente.
Não seria irónico termos de admitir, quando decidíssemos Terraformar Marte, que as suas formas de vida eram produto da nossa própria contaminação?
Seria seguramente embaraçoso.
O que poderia vir acontecer se não o deixarmos trabalhar.
Haverá um cargo melhor do que o seu?
A certa altura dentro da sede principal da NASA, em Washington, um departamento conhecido por Divisão do Universo, onde se estudava tudo o que estivesse para além do Sistema Solar.
O responsável por esse departamento era nada mais, nada menos que o director do Universo!
Depois de uma reorganização ficamos com o actual título de oficial encarregado da Protecção Planetária, que agora pertence à minha colega Catherine Conley.
Para os astro – biólogos que estudam a possível existência de vida noutros mundos, as viagens interplanetárias não tem de ser exclusivas dos cometas ou das naves.
Não é descabido dizem, pensar que possa haver nos Espaço diminutos viajantes do cósmicos, minúsculos passageiros clandestinos ocultos nas pregas de um fato espacial, germes – cowboys montados em asteróides ou infelizes organismos deslocados à força pelas colisões entre objectos celestes.
Segundo a hipótese de panspermia, todas essas formas de vida poderiam ter andado a saltar de planeta em planeta, levadas daqui para acolá pela brutal meteorologia cósmica.
Vistas assim as coisas, a vida na Terra poderia perfeitamente provir de Marte…e vice-versa.
Ou talvez da Lua Europa, ou Titã.
Talvez o esporo com a centelha da vida tenha vindo da nuvem de Oort…
Para os especialistas que estudam a possibilidade de encontrar vida em Marte, as implicações desse fenómeno seriam astronómicas.
Se descobrissem vida marciana e esta revelasse aparentada com a da Terra, o nosso deixaria de ser o planeta eleito, o consequente escândalo religioso seria deveras interessante.
Uma coisa é certa: sabe – se que milhões de toneladas da superfície marciana foram e continuam a ser enviadas para o Espaço devido ao impacto de meteoritos.
De facto, estima – se que chovem sobre a Terra, anualmente, 500 quilos de rochas marcianas.
Algumas desintegram – se, mas outras atingem a superfície, e as que aterram sobre o manto branco da Antártida são fáceis de ver.
Foi ali, com efeito, que surgiu o ALH84001, em 1984, uma pedra marciana catapultada para primeiro plano pela NASA ao anunciarem a descoberta no seu interior de estruturas fósseis geradas pelo que podem ter sido micro – organismos.
Posteriormente, outros indícios parecem contrariar essa hipótese, mas a controvérsia sobre a possível descoberta das primeiras formas de vida extraterrestre continuam em aberto.
Recentemente uma equipe do Laboratório de Geofísica do Instituto Carnegie (Estados Unidos) mostrou que Marte pode produzir campos químicos ricos em carbono e hidrogénio, os elementos que formam a pedra angular da vida que desconhecemos.
Depois de estudarem minuciosamente o ALH84001, os cientistas concluíram que os compostos orgânicos não chegaram a Marte vindos do Espaço, mas formaram – se com base em reacções ocorridas no interior da própria rocha.

Medidas de Segurança

Agora, os exobiólogos interrogam – se sobre a possibilidade de a vida nativa marciana caso exista, poderá ser perigosa.
Isso é absolutamente impossível! Afirma o engenheiro planetário Robert Zubrin.
Cada micro – organismo está adaptado ao seu hospedeiro e a um meio ambiente específico.
No caso dos que provocam doenças ao ser humano, é o interior do nosso corpo ou do outro mamífero estreitamente relacionado connosco.

E acrescenta que não faz sentido fazer tanto barulho em redor da questão da contaminação de Marte ou da Terra provocada pelo intercâmbio de amostras e sondas espaciais.
Todavia, para o astrobiólogo Jonh Rummel, é a posição de Zubrin que se torna absurda.
Não faz sentido rejeitar as precauções, em especial as que adoptamos para isolar as amostras trazidas de Marte; a verdade é que não devemos expor as pessoas e o meio ambiente a matéria cuja natureza desconhecemos em absoluto.
Mesmo que uma suposta forma de vida marciana estivesse relacionada com a nossa, nada nos garantiria total segurança ao manipula – la.
Zubrin assegura que cada organismo está adaptado ao seu meio.
Como explica então casos como o do micro – organismo Deinococcus Radiodurans, capaz de resistir a doses de radiação extremamente elevadas, que pode ser encontrado no Pólo Norte até aos tanques de refrigeração das centrais nucleares?
Eu diria que é quase como se um tubarão tivesse invadido as planícies africanas.
E que outros micróbios do género desconhecemos?
Rummel sublinha que, até há pouco tempo, não fazíamos a ideia da existência das bactérias extremofilas que vivem nas chaminés hidrotermais do fundo do mar ou das que habitam a milhares de metros de profundidade sob a crosta terrestre.
Marte é demasiado importante.
Devemos levar a cabo uma exploração responsável, pois é de uma boa manipulação das amostras que poderá depender encontramos ou não, formas de vida.

Nunca podemos estar 100% seguros mas seríamos idiotas se não minimizássemos o risco de contaminação, diz Rummel, consciente de que a NASA tem pouco mais de uma década para decidir como irá alojar as amostras que pensa obter, por volta de 2020, da primeira missão consagrada a esse objectivo.

Enquanto esse momento não chega, a agencia espacial Norte Americana procura averiguar até que ponto um organismo poderá suportar os rigores de uma viagem espacial a bordo de um asteróide e sobreviver ao impacto contra um planeta.

Patrícia Fajardo e Wayne Nicholson, microbiólogos da Universidade da Florida, trabalham á 20 anos com endosporos.

Saber que o Sol atinge seis mil graus de temperatura pode parecer assustador, sobretudo quando já começa a ser insuportável nas alturas em que os termómetros chegam aos 40 na Terra. Ainda mais assustador é descobrir que algo essencial à vida no nosso planeta acabará por desaparecer.

Imprescindível e perigoso, o astro-rei é muitas vezes um mistério para a Humanidade. O calendário dedica-lhe o dia 3 de Maio e o Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra aproveitou para revelar a crianças e jovens alguns segredos da estrela. A iniciativa ‘4 dias 1 Sol’ teve início na terça-feira e termina hoje. Ao longo da semana, alunos de escolas de todo o País puderam observar o astro, conhecer o Sistema Solar e participar em ateliês pedagógicos.

"Sabem quantotempo demora o Sol a dar a volta sobresi próprio?" Quemperguntaé JoanaRebelo, responsável pela área educativa do Museu, a 24 alunos do 4.º ano da Escola EB1 de Barcouço (Mealhada). "Vinte e seis dias", responde, perante a admiração das crianças sentadas no chão diante de um globo onde são reflectidos os planetas.

"O Sol tem quase cinco mil milhões de anos e está a 150 milhões de quilómetros da Terra", continua JoanaRebelo,lançando mais um desafio. As explicações sucedem-se e os alunos já se sentem astronautas. Ficam a saber que o Sol é uma estrela, uma enorme esfera de gás e plasma composta essencialmente por hidrogénio e hélio, cujo diâmetro mede 1,4 mil milhões de quilómetros.

Aos alunos do Secundário, Joana Rebelo costuma explicar ainda que o Sol brilha por causa da temperatura da fotosfera, responsável pela cor amarelo-alaranjada da estrela. Revela que a luz do Sol não se deve a nenhuma reacção química, mas sim a uma reacção de fusão nuclear que decorre no seu centro, onde a junção de átomos de hidrogénio é transformada em hélio, sendo deste processo que resulta a energia que nos permite viver. Para a maioria é uma novidade saber que o Sol vai desaparecer dentro de 4,5 mil milhões de anos e que o Homem já acreditou que, durante a noite, uma deusa com um manto de estrelas tapava o céu e ‘escondia’ o Sol.

Acabada a explicação, os alunos de Barcouço e Praia de Mira fizeram, com cartolina e plasticina, um simulador de eclipses solares. Empenhada no trabalho, Ana Francisca, 10 anos, da EB1 da Praia de Mira, dizia: "Não há extraterrestres. Os astronautas andam à procura para ver se há vida noutro lado. Mas não há, pois não?" "Não acreditamos neles", afiançava Jaime Maçarico, do alto dos seus nove anos. "Mas se existem são muito mais inteligentes do que nós", rematou Emanuel Cuco, um ano mais velho. Joana Rebelo – Às crianças falamos das características mais simples do Sol. Dizemos que é muito quente, roda sobre si próprio…Aos mais velhos falamos das reacções nucleares e outras questões mais complexas relacionadas com a luz, por exemplo.

– Além da partemais teórica, que actividades os alunos desenvolveram?

– Fizeram um trabalho com questões sobre o Sol: observação solar, observação e desenho das manchas solares e ateliês em que realizaram um simulador de eclipses.

– Como se preparam actividadesparatornara Ciênciaacessívelaos mais novos?

– Temos de experimentar as actividades que desenvolvemos e ver se são adequadas às idades. O objectivo é que as crianças sejam autónomas e considerem as tarefas interessantes.

NÚMERO DE VISITANTES A CRESCER

Aberto ao público desde Dezembro de 2006, o Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra foi criado com o objectivo de "promover o conhecimento científico" e "reunir o acervo disperso por vários museus universitários e pelas faculdades", explica o seu director, Paulo Gama Mota. O novo modelo de antevisão, desenvolvido por uma equipa de investigadores alemães, demonstrou que existirá um arrefecimento nos próximos dez anos.

Esta oscilação natural das correntes atlânticas, actual responsável por transportar as águas quentes dos trópicos para latitudes próximas da Europa, é um fenómeno ainda pouco conhecido, mas que ocorre todos os 60 a 70 anos. Isto permitiria explicar o aumento de temperatura verificado no início do século passado, antes de um arrefecimento na década de 40.

Apesar das boas notícias, que entusiasmam os cientistas, pois dão mais tempo para planear o futuro da Terra, o mesmo modelo dá conta de um aumento repentino da temperatura global a partir de 2020.

Os investigadores não se mostraram surpreendidos com os resultados, esperando que isso não abrande a urgência de adoptar medidas para evitar a emissão de gases poluentes para a atmosfera.

Los diez años serán después decisivos para el conocimiento de esta fuerza que aceleró la extensión del universo y represente setenta por ciento de todo qué sabemos en el espacio.


Tiene un mística, asignación obscura, muchas veces asociadas a las fuerzas del mal. "Toda la fenomenologia de los casas asombradas es absolutamente natural"

Objetos que flotan, vuelan por todas las dependencias de la casa sin tocar en nada o en nadie, cosas que desaparecen noutros lugares y piedras que atraviesan telhados, forros y lajes sin damnificar, o que atraviesan paredes, ruidos y sonidos que ecoam por todas las partes sin tener causa visible, ropas que queman dentro de los armários cerrados, queman selectivamente, unas queman las otras en el cabide inmediatamente al lado no, luces que aparecen del nada, odores que se sienten sin que ninguna substancia sea identificada…

Tales relatos son comunes cuando se trata de las temidas casas asombradas o poltergaist.

Esta fenomenologia acontecerá en todas épocas, pueblos y credos.

El correcto es que la ciencia moderna ya estudió y explicó todos estos fenómenos, sea los espontâneos o similares en laboratorios.

Analizando más a fondo tales casas descubre – se que es imprescindível la presencia del hombre para que ocurran las manifestaciones, aleja – si el hombre de más de 50 metros, monitora – si el ambiente con sensores de movimiento, máquinas de filmar remotas, máquinas fotográficas automáticas y nada acontece.

De hecho el hombre es el protagonista de esa situación, porque es él que emana la telergia – energía humana y responsable por los fenómenos que acontecen en las llamadas casas asombradas.

La telergia es una energía orgánica, somática detectável a los infravermelhos, que ya fue medido en laboratorios y es conocida desde 1840..

La telergia dirigida por la gana del inconsciente produce fenómenos como el movimiento de objetos sin contacto físico (Telecinesia), o ruidos extraños como batidas y estampidos (Tipologia).

Telergia actuando sobre la materia, permite que una piedra, por ejemplo atraviese una pared y vuelva a ser materia otra vez.

ES lo que se llama aporte.

La essência del aporte es materia a través de materia.

La telergia al influir en la velocidad de las partículas que componen el objeto consigue que se transforme en energía y así atraviesa cualquier obstáculo, después por el proceso inverso la energía transforma – si nuevamente en objeto.

Los fenómenos que son humanos, son en la mayoría provocados por algunas personas que residen en la casa, en general (no siempre) el responsable es uno(a) adolescente con algún problema psicológico / emocional de cualquier orden.

Nota – se que un fenómeno puede desencadenar otros y que una persona puede contaminar las demás (Contagio psíquico).

Aleja – si la persona epicentro y la tendencia es calmar o aún extinguir los fenómenos.

La intención, aún es inconsciente de la persona que produce los fenómenos es llamar la atención de los demás para sí misma o para sus problemas, por eso mientras más atención se dé a los acontecimientos, más intensos ellos quedan (se ha plateia, tiene show).

La orientación psicológica adecuada cura el protagonista y consecuentemente los fenómenos desaparecen.

La Telergia puede manifestar – si también en formas de calor y entonces dice – se Termogénese.

La termogénese puede llegar a la combustão espontânea (Pirogénese).

Son los famosos incendios misteriosos.

La Pirogénese hace – si altamente peligrosa y prejudicial en el caso de auto combustão o combustão humana espontânea, intencionalmente conocida por las iniciales SHC (Spontaneous Human Combustion).

La causa de la SHC, como de todos los otros fenómenos , es siempre un desequilibrio de orden psicológica, o social, afectiva, emocional, etc.

En el caso SHC este desequilibrio alcanza tal proporciones que incendia la persona.

Dad la necesidad de ser personas equilibradas en todos los sentidos.

Conclusión: Toda la fenomenologia de las casas asombradas hubiera volado, ay tendríamos que admitir una fuerza sobrenatural en acción.

Pero en toda la historia eso nunca aconteció.
